BACKGROUND:  Literature and Justification
 "My research is an attempt to make available more knowledge of single female parents in professional leadership positions.  My intentions are to try and motivate and give guidelines in making accomplishment of sustaining these occupations more successful.  Whilst being able to acquire more in depth awareness to benefit myself and others who fit these demographic profiles or who may be interested in this area of study. 

Therefore, the research intends to contribute to any previous research which has identified any factors that may delay or prevent these positive professional advancements, thus enabling female parents to utilise as preventative positive resolutions to enable career development.  However, this research also intends to highlight any contributory research on the positive aspects of female parents’ career advancement.

My choice of research topic is mainly due to personal interest in single parents and their career potentials in senior occupational posts.  As a single parent myself with twin babies and a teenage son and having great aspirations of becoming a senior manager, with past experiences in managing a 25-team organisation with great discomfort, and my previous studies in Business.  I am completely fascinated by in depth research to obtain more understanding of the favourable and disadvantageous variables associated with obtaining and sustaining a leadership profession.

My previous studies were in related areas such as sociology, psychology, specific business modules such as, behaviour at work, understanding the nature of work, transitions in work, human resources in organisations, as well as organisational and strategic management, accounting and finance, as well as 15 years experience in office administration with some 5 years in supervisory and first line management positions within the public and third sector as well as a small proportion of employment within the private sector.  These experiences I feel do add to my philosophy in being able to offer some contribution towards this study.

The intentions of this research are also to gain more insight into the possibilities and motivational factors which could assist me and others similar to me in achieving a senior management role in business.  These are some of the reasons why the research is worth my endeavours.

There have been various academic sources of literature available specifically related to single parents and on the other disciplines of business management.  There are also sources that combine both elements.  The subject areas that would be utilised to aid this compilation may come under three separate disciplines, namely human resource management, recruitment and selection but mainly areas considered with leadership within the business management discipline.  There are various secondary and tertiary sources of data available that can be accessed and with some guidance through primary sources.  These types of data derive from books, journals, statistics, government surveys, dissertations, government data and various newspaper articles.

My particular research is more centred on specifically obtaining leadership or management roles in business, as a single mother in the global economy.  This area of study seems to not have as much research as the previous and present studies I have read because literature related to this specific business management role on their own, but not a lot of information having the two elements combined together.

I will draw on previous studies and concepts within equal opportunities and human resource and selection theories as well as the nature of management and leadership and the various perspectives associated with them. "(©Saldeba N.)
